What Do Carbohydrates Do? Are They Good Or Bad For You?

You may wonder what carbohydrates do for to your body. You may want to know whether they are good or bad for you. More and more people today are going for low carb diets nowadays. Hence, it seems important to know what carbohydrates actually do for you.

Carbohydrates, proteins and fats are the three major nutrients, which help you to stay energetic. Carbohydrates are obtained from plants and they help to fuel your muscles as well as mind. It is therefore indispensable to consume carbohydrate-rich foods. Carbohydrates are however both good and bad for you. You need to take 45 to 65% of your calories from carbohydrates only. This can help to meet your daily nutritional requirements. If you do not take sufficient carbohydrates, you may be more prone to the risk of chronic diseases.

Carbohydrates that are obtained from whole grains, fruits, vegetables and beans are said to be good carbs. These carbs are also known as complex carbs and they tend to contain more fiber. Sugars like lactose, galactose, fructose and sucrose are termed as simple carbs. Processed sugars contained in candies, carbonated beverages and table sugar are empty calories. The good carbs or complex carbs give you fiber that is more important for your health. These carbs are absorbed by your body gradually, so it avoids spikes in blood sugar. Bad carbs are obtained from refined white grains and sugars. These carbs lead to weight gain and other problems.

You may now understand what carbohydrates do clearly. If your meal contains simple carbs, you would spike your blood sugar. This in turn leads your body to secrete insulin into your blood, which causes the level of sugar to drop. On the other hand, if you take meals that contain complex carbs, you can get energy for a longer period, as your body takes long time to digest them.

You need to remember that simple sugars are not bad for your health, if you get them from fruits, vegetables, milk and milk products. They contain essential nutrients and they provide sufficient source of energy to your body.

It is advisable to take five or six small meals in a day, instead of taking three large meals. This helps to increase your metabolism. You can take more complex carbs and small amount of simple carbs. If you select the carbs for your diet properly, they are really good for your health.

Lost Weight By Cutting Carbs

I did lose weight by cutting carbs.  I cut a lot of carbs out and it did work for me. I lost 40 lbs but it took me almost 6 months.  I found it pretty easy to follow.  It’s pretty to eat.  The foods on the diet consisted of vegetables and meat.  I didn’t eat fruit for almost 4 months.

After a few weeks you don’t really crave the carbs and you can stay on it pretty regularly.  I did the diet during holidays and didn’t have that much trouble.  But after almost a year I wanted to eat something.  I think everybody’s ethnic and familial lifestyles affect them.  For me, it was not eating rice for so long that I missed.  I am a big sushi eater so this was a sacrifice for me.  I wanted to eat a pizza, or pasta and these were off limits to me.

When I went off the diet I gained everything and more.  The truth is, this type of eating plan can only be something you consider to be a diet and temporary.  Nobody wants to eat meat and vegetables solely for the rest of their lives.  It’s impractical.  The best diet would be one that you can keep up for the rest of your life.  It would be part of your life and would be healthy and practical.

Currently, I’m eating 5 smaller meals a day consisting of lean meats, vegetables, fruits and whole grains. It increases your metabolism.  You have much more energy and your not as hungry because you are eating more frequently.

The other thing is I’ve tried to drink at least 8 glasses of water a day which helps you to feel fuller.  Drinking a glass of water with my meal has helped me to eat less.

Also,  I try to take smaller bites and chew more.  Along with this tip, is using smaller plates. Smaller bites and smaller plates seem to help with eating less.  I know it sounds corny but it does work.

I lost weight by cutting carbs and it does work for the short term but the harsh reality is that you can’t really keep it up for the rest of your life. Do you want to lose weight fast and healthy? Get more FREE info by clicking here!

How to Find Good Sources of Carbohydrates

Carbohydrates are sugars and our source of energy. They fuel the brain and aid in the work of muscles. Carbs from fiber sources also aid indigestion. You need to research and learn how to find good sources. They compose half of our diets. First you need some knowledge about carbohydrates to know how to find good sources.

What are Good Carbohydrates?

Carbohydrates are either complex or simple. Simple Carbs are sugar sources for fast energy. Simple carbs can be found in fruit, some vegetables, candy, table sugar and any processed food with sugar. These are not necessarily bad carbs but this knowledge does not help you find out how to find good sources.

Complex ones contain fiber and other nutrients. Some sources or complex carbs are breads, potatoes, rice, cereal, pasta, bran, whole grain foods and raw veggies.

Some people divide carbohydrates into good or bad. The “good” carbs simply have more nutrients for the body. The “bad” carbs are sometimes made up of empty calories, which mean they have little nutritious value.

What Carbohydrates Should I Include in my Diet?

The truth is we need both simple and complex carbs in our diet. With a little knowledge we can find how to find good sources and how they work in our bodies.

Large common grocery stores have all the carbohydrates you need. Grocery stores have fresh fruit and vegetables and carry any fiber source you may be looking for. Co-op stores may carry special grains and fresh fruit. Farmer’s markets have plethora of good fresh fruit and vegetables. These sources contain everything you need on how to find a good source, but which ones should you eat?

Do not get caught up in what are good or bad carbs. Some carbs just provide more nutrients than others. The best sources are whole grains, fruits, vegetables, and beans. These foods provide minerals, fiber and vitamins. We all need carbohydrates to fuel our bodies and make them function.

Our bodies need carbohydrates for energy to function. They help our brain stay alert. They are needed for our heart, digestive, immune and nervous system. The fiber that we get from it aids our digestion and help our bodies gets rid of toxins. Our bodies would not survive without it.

Carbohydrates make up about half of our entire diet and caloric intake. Most of your carbs should come from complex carbs. Whole grain, fruits and vegetables are the best.

Do You Know What Carbohydrates Do?

Carbohydrates are a necessary part of our diet. They along with proteins and fats are essential nutrients. Healthy Carbohydrates, which include saccharides, are a supply of energy for our bodies and brains. These healthy carbohydrates do not just supply energy, but also minerals, fiber and vitamins. They are in fact a fuel for the body and if your intake is too low then you will feel sluggish and tired, so it is important to know what carbohydrates do.

What Carbohydrates do and what are they?

As defined in the dictionary; a carbohydrate is any of a large group of compounds which includes sugars starch and cellulose. They contain carbon, hydrogen and oxygen.

Carbohydrates make up a very large part of all organic matter and one of their primary roles is to serve as energy and fuel stores. They also play a role as structural elements in the walls of plants and bacteria. Carbohydrates also have an important place in the framework of RNA and DNA.

Carbohydrates can be roughly dived into two groups.

First there are Simple carbs, which the body obtains from foods such as vegetables, milk and fruit. These are a prime source of energy.

Next the Complex carbs are found in cereals, bread, rice and legumes (beans, peanuts, lentils). These complex carbs tend to contain a greater percentage of dietary fibre than simple carbs, and should form the major portion of your healthy balanced diet.

Where should you obtain the Carbohydrates required in your diet?

Around half of your total calorie intake should be from carbohydrates and the majority of these should be complex carbs. Try to get your carbs mainly from foods which have undergone minimal processing and avoid foods and drinks which contain an abundance of simple sugars such as cakes, biscuits, soft drinks and some processed cereals. These simple carbs will tend make you gain weight, while avoiding them will have the opposite effect.

Do not regard carbs as something to be omitted from your diet; they are a vital part of it. Rather concentrate on eating the right kind. It is a little like choosing the correct fuel for your car. It may run with a different fuel, but it will not run as efficiently. If in doubt take advice from a weight loss program which promotes a healthy eating plan; not a fad program, but rather one which is based on natural foods or foods which have had a smaller degree of processing. It is important to understand what carbohydrates do. If you are unsure what to do, a weight loss program which promotes a healthy eating plan will put you on the right track.

There are several weight loss programs available each of which can help you lose weight safely and confidently. They are flexible and make use of natural foods and provide a choice of menus, including vegetarian.

Low Carbohydrate Or No Carbohydrates – What Role Carbohydrates Play in Your Weight Loss Plan

After experimenting with several weight loss strategies, and obtaining very marginal if any results, I’ve come to the conclusion that all diets need some form of carbohydrates to  work the best.

Let me explain, for instance you can go with a no carbohydrate, all protein diet, eliminating carbohydrates completely from your diet, but the downside to this is that you ingest more fat than is reasonably healthy. Side effects include high blood pressure, elevated creatine levels, and in some cases higher cholesterol. You can lose weight with a no carbohydrate diet but energy levels can suffer. The body needs carbohydrates especially in the morning, when energy levels need to be restored for the duties of the day, if your body runs out of fuel it searches for the next available source of glycogen and that is the muscles, this is counter productive if you’re also exercising to help with your weight loss. So for obvious health reasons a complete carbohydrate free diet is not the best idea.

The most effective way to lose weight and shed fat pounds is to cycle your carbohydrate intake between low and moderate good carbohydrate intake. The key here is to consume healthy clean burning carbohydrates, called complex carbohydrates, and avoid the starchy ones, especially if you are not active. If  the starches aren’t converted into energy then they become fat. Foods you want to avoid include white bread, white rice, sodas, cookies, potato chips, white refined sugars, white pasta, etc.

The best carbohydrates are the ones that don’t cause an immediate spike in blood sugar levels, this occurs because of the direct to blood stream effect starchy, sugary foods have in our blood stream. Better choices would be any 100%whole wheat bread, whole wheat or spinach pasta, plain oatmeal, brown rice, almonds, sweet potatoes, broccoli, and baked potato chips.

A successful weight loss plan should include foods that have sufficient amounts of proteins, carbohydrates, and even some fats. For maximum effectiveness exercise should be included, and yes you need carbohydrates to give your body fuel to burn, until your body has been trained to burn fats more efficiently.

A short booklet I recently published called “How to lose 36 lbs in 6 weeks” lists several good fat burning recipes and lists foods with no fat making properties.
